For amateur juniper bonsaists a spectacular and unique place
exists in Japan, Osezaki. This is located near Numazu city in Suruga Bay, 125km
south of Tokyo, more commonly known as Biwa island. The reefs and marine life
attract scuba divers and the area is popular for water sports. However, for
tree enthusiasts on the shores there stand gigantic wild juniperus chinensis
that are several hundred years old. These junipers are recognised as a national
treasure and have intricate twisted and knotted trunks and branches. A temple
gate marks the entrance to this spot.
